8th June - A Day in the Sun


Our last day in Connecticut - off to LA tomorrow morning on the first leg of our homeward journey.

Last night? - A night with Simon, a movie and popcorn - reliving past days! 

Bo has had a great tournament in Delaware - they will be back early this afternoon.

Bernie and I sit in the sun - we listen to the neighbours chatting over the side fence - we listen as Jane provides some last minute French tutoring for Parker - his exam is tomorrow! 

We watch - we swear we can see the plants growing before our eyes - spring is so fast here!!! - we look at the pollen falling from the trees - I rush inside to replenish my body's reserves of anti hystermines.

I retire out of the sun to a garden seat in the shade - the chipmunks tear around doing what chipmonks do - Birds? - plenty of them but they are quite!

I relax on the garden seat under the trees in deep shade - I drift off for a second - there is a strange noise - another strange noise - my neither regions experience a gradual but steadily increasing downward motion that gently deposits the seat on the layer of soft mulch that is the garden bed - 15 consecutive Connecticut winters have proven to much for the poor old garden seat - it has retired hurt! - I know what next year's Christmas present will be but I have no idea what the chipmonks thought about the whole episode!

I watch the kids playing their latest craze - spike ball! - they compete and compete without a harsh word between them..

A last meal with the boys - we pile into the lacrosse wagon so named because it seems to do little other than to shuttle lacrosse playing family members between home, practice, home and tournament. 

To New Canaan the next town north - "tequila mockingbird" - great name for a Mexican restaurant - great food - superb margaritas! 
The boys? - funny - polite - mischievous - hungry - the food disappears almost before it arrives. 

Home - Bo insists on a concert - he loves his guitars - he loves his music - he is good - maybe he and his piano playing mate might form a band next year!

The night? - restful! - we look outside from the 15th floor of the Amara  - it is raining - Bernie with her weather fixation reaches for the iPad and the latest weather report - we decide to amend the day's plans - the projected weather not is conducive to an afternoon at the "Gardens on the Bay" - she chooses a pair of Chinese temples in the near vicinity of the hotel to be the focus of our afternoon visitations.   Soon after breakfast there is a short break in the weather - we step out of the hotel for a walk in the immediate area - we stumble across the local food market - local after local line up at the food stalls for local Singaporean faire - this is a traditional food court that serves Street food in the traditional way. 9th May - To Lecce

Off to Lecce today - the weather is warm but overcast - the Taxi ordered by the B&B arrives precisely on time and we are at the airport to pick up our hire car in a flash.  We breakfast at McDonald's not on a big Mac but on a rather nice panini. We front a small queue at Nogolaire and go through the rig-maroille that all rental car companies put  their customers through - I have private rental car insurance but that doesn't stop the upsell! - eventually the message gets through - I don't want extra insurance!  I pay the full free upfront and agree to them taking a further 800 euro as security.  We find the car - a new Renault eSpace - our first task? - getting it to talk English! - after some discussions with ChatGtp we are successful. Bernie drives - Mike navigates - soon we are on the freeways of Puglia past Brindisi towards Lecce. 25th May - Another day in Palermo

We decide to delete a day trip to Cefulu from our itinerary - we have seen enough seaside and nice towns for this trip.  We head down to the port through narrow lanes - they are quite and yet to be renovated - we wonder? - who owns the old apartments - they must now be rich at least on paper - the unpunished and now retired members of the Mafia? We reach the port - runners - working boat after working boat - pleasure craft - we photograph Falcone looking down on the working craft! We return back past the church - men in their sunday best stand outside - I guess they have been to mass even though mass is still going on! We return to the square - down our lane - it is virtually empty - the street food places are just starting to open - we take a table - order - we wait sipping a cappuccino until set up is complete and the kitchen is open.
